Solution Methods

In general, static elastic problems - especially those involving complicated shapes or anisotropic elasticity, are solved by numerical methods - typically finite element methods. Most of these approaches can be traced back to a variational principle.

Situations which might be of interest to CMMP include

• Strains under an AFM tip;
• Stresses in layered materials or coated particles.
