What is it? Well - it's the first new phase of ice to be discovered since the 1930s. Werner Kuhs (now in Göttingen) and I have been chasing it since we first saw something odd in a neutron diffraction pattern under pressure at the ILL in the early 80s. But it took the persistence, imagination, and cunning of Colin Lobban - then the UCL Condensed Matter Group's first Ph.D. student - to back it into a corner and solve its structure from powder diffraction. Beautiful, isn't it? You can read more about it in Nature 391, 268-270, (1998). |
